If you have a limited amount of attention to spend on optimising a post, spend it on the first sentence of the caption. It is doing three jobs at once and most people write it last.
Job one: search matching
Instagram, TikTok and YouTube all match caption text against queries. A first line reading "obsessed with how this turned out 😍" matches nothing anyone would ever type. "How I fixed a wobbly kitchen chair with one tool" matches a real search.
Job two: the scroll decision
The first line is usually all that shows before the "more" cut. It is the only part of your caption most viewers will ever read, and it decides whether they stop.
Job three: classification
Before anyone interacts with a new post, the platform builds a guess about its subject from the text available. A specific opening line makes that guess sharper, which means a better-matched first audience.
How to write it
Say what the post contains, plainly, using the words someone would use to look for it. Then let the personality come in the second sentence. This feels flat to write and it consistently outperforms the reverse order.
A useful test: read the first line alone and ask whether a stranger would know what they are about to see. If not, rewrite it before you touch the tags.
